Baja California

The Ultimate Whale and Dolphin Photographic Encounter

Humpback Whale breachingOf all the world's whales, the playfully acrobatic Humpback Whale is surely the most loved. Here one breaches spectacularly right beside our boat at the Gorda Banks, southern Baja California. (image by Mark Beaman)

This two-week trip to the most extraordinary place on our planet for cetaceans (whales and dolphins) is scheduled for April 2011. Not only are the whale and dolphin encounters truly remarkable (including Grey Whales at stroking distance, Humpback Whales and gigantic Blue Whales), but there are some wonderful seabirds, close-up seals (including California Sealion and Northern Elephant Seal), fascinating landbirds, endemic reptiles and strange cacti and other interesting vegetation on the scenically spectacular desert islands of Baja.

Full details will be published by late September 2009.

Blue Whale blowingBaja California is the very best place on earth to find the endangered Blue Whale, the largest animal on our planet, and April is the best month of all. This is just one of six Blue Whales we found feeding together in April 2009 and spent nearly two hours with. (image by Mark Beaman)

Humpback tail breachingTail breaching by Humpbacks, where the whale hurls itself out of the water tail first, as opposed to the more common 'lob-tailing', is both unusual and awesome. (image by Mark Beaman)

Grey Whale strokingHave you ever imagined being able to stroke a whale? Well at Baja's Laguna San Ignacio the Grey Whale calves are utterly unafraid of people and seem to enjoy the attention. (image by Mark Beaman)
